Engaging – 11:20

I’ve been at home recovering from a bout of bronchitis for the last couple of days. In between handling work stuff on the couch with juice, soup and tissues in tow, I was home to get some fun mail to support my two “side hustles”. 

The first is an Amway business I’ve had for several years. Anytime new products are released that fit my lifestyle, I try to jump on them quickly and try it out so I can share my new discoveries with friends and family. Amway’s skincare brand, Artistry, recently launched a new line called Hydra-V to replace their Essentials products. Packaging is sleek and the product smells fresh. As soon as I finish the last of my Essentials I plan to make the Hydra-V switch. 
 

My second, secondary source of income is also how I balance out my cupcake addiction. Mondays after work and Thursday’s when some of you are just waking, I teach an indoor cycling class called RPM. It’s a Les Mills program that’s perfect for burning fat, building endurance and muscle. I’ve taught for 2 years (this month is my teaching anniversary!) and loved getting to encourage those in my class to go farther physically than they thought they could. With my new regular teaching schedule and Les Mills’ partnership with Reebok, I get a sweet deal on merch. Here is the first of two orders I made to look fashionable as I get fit. 
 
Having a side hustle does have its perks. 

Certifiable

Almost 2 years ago, I walked into my first Les Mills RPM class. I was scared, anxious and slightly angry at my friend, Josh, for convincing me to take the class. You see, whenever I would see people leaving spin classes at my regular gym, they always looked like they had just left a one hour tour of hell. I really wasn’t into the idea of going on said tour. So I reluctantly agreed to take the class. Me being the competitor that I am I went full force, going as fast as possible where required and stomping it out on the hills.  I was easy on myself with the resistance knob, but kept it honest for the most part. I was sweating like I had never sweat before. The music was thumping some of my favorite dance and house songs. By the end of class I was cheesing so hard. I had fallen in love with RPM.

After the class the instructor told me I looked strong on the bike. I told her that was funny because one, I had never taken a cycling class before and two, I had never learned to ride a bike. Yes, you read that correctly. After about four or five months of taking the class three days a week, my instructor turned friend, Ruth, asked if I had ever considered teaching. Without hesitation I said YES! There has always been a part of me that is very much into health and fitness. I considered getting certified to teach pilates and Zumba a couple of times. But I found my passion in RPM. Seriously, I can’t help but smile on the bike even though my quads and hamstrings are screaming at me. The music is amazing and pushes you to keep going until the end.

The road to certification was long. Les Mills has training  all over the US throughout the year for their many classes. Unfortunately for me, they always fell on weekends where I was out of town for one reason or another. I watched as two of my friends got certified to teach while I waited for an available weekend. The delay was even causing me to question if I would be suitable to teach, if I had the fitness level and energy. Finally, at the moment when I  had almost given up on the idea, they announced a training weekend where I would be in town and it was only a 30 minute drive away!

The night before I couldn’t sleep and I didn’t really want to eat. I was sooo nervous. It didn’t help that I spent 3 hours at the DMV which only added to my anxiety. Fortunately I was able to get a decent night’s sleep. The weekend was incredibly physically and mentally demanding. Thankfully I was surrounded by a great group of future instructors who were extremely encouraging and equally as nervous. By the end of each day I was soaking wet, wiped out, and sore in places I never knew could get sore. The weekend ended with the declaration that I was certified to teach RPM! Not gonna lie, I got a little weepy, but kept it cool because it didn’t appear that anyone was as moved by this as I was.

This was just the beginning for me. Certification was the first step in process of getting to teach my own class one day. For now I sub for some of the instructors a few times a month. I am proud that I endured something so physically demanding to completion. I realized that if I convince my head that my body can do something, I can actually do it.

Determined

Recently I went to lunch with friend and fellow Blogger, Alexis. We chatted about how much we love food and how our shared addiction has created a need for us to burn some calories as warmer weather and shorter sleeves approach. To motivate ourselves we’ve started using the tag #teamtwopiece. I thought of it after making an impromptu J. Crew ruched, bandeau bikini top purchase. I couldn’t resist the sale price reduced from $42 to $9. After hitting the checkout button I experienced buyer’s remorse when I realized that the little pudge I’ve stored from winter was not ready for public viewing. However, instead of quickly calling J. Crew and nixing my order, I decided to use that cute, peacock colored top to encourage me to get back to my roots of eating healthier and regularly working out.

For over a year I was a pescatarian, which means the only meat I ate came from a body of water. I can honestly say that was the best I’ve ever felt. Mostly sticking to salmon, tuna, shrimp, and crab I got a health dose of omega-3 and protein. The lighter fish also helped me not feel heavy and weighed down after I ate. During this time I also discovered that carbs really aren’t the enemy I thought they were toward my body, it was fat. Everyone is different, but for my body, fatty foods make me pack on the pounds at an alarming rate. Seafood is the best source of fats for the way my body works.

While I was practicing pescatarianism, I also started taking a spin class at Gold’s Gym. This wasn’t your typical spin class, it’s called RPM. RPM is a Les Mills interval style of cycling that is driven by the beats in the music. My kind of class. I became addicted from day one thanks to the amazing music and fabulous instructor turned good friend, Ruth! My body responded so well to RPM and weight training. Every picture I see from last summer I think to myself, DANG, I look good!

I got out of these habits thanks to a crazier than usual work schedule and life. As I write this I realize that the bikini top has caused me to take my life back in so many ways. With it’s purchase I booked a much needed vacation to Miami. A true vacation that is on my own terms has been a long time coming. The top has forced me to start eating healthier again and (gasp) cooking again. I have started using MyFittnessPal again to track my food and exercise. And although I got kicked out of Gold’s (long and funny story for another time), I have decided to take spin classes at the gym I actually belong to. Thank you bikini top!
